Experience of a Lifetime

Zippo the caracal

I have successfully hand raised many animals, bat eared fox, springbok, steenbuck and even a dassie but  when i was approached about taking in a 4 day old caracal, i had no idea just how rewarding it would be. On the 9th of September 2008 i drove to Grahamstown to fetch a tiny baby caracal that was in dire straits. Hes eyes were still closed but man was he feisty.

Snow on Mount Camdeboo

It is this time of the year where we tend to get some snow on our high altitude areas.  On the 14th June 2010 we got a call from our managers at about 20:00 to go and look outside.  When we went outside there was light snow coming down.  It usually snows on our high altitude areas like I mentioned and though the snow was falling down in the valley it was expected that it would be melted by the next morning.

Anyone missing some cheetah?

Well anything can happen in the Camdeboo... We spotted two cheetah from next door walking around with our Cheetah on Mount Camdeboo. So we had to call Mac the vet to dart them and "return to sender" luckily all went well and the two awol cheetahs are back were they belong, naughty naughty. That said wouldn't it be great if there were no fences… Just a dream but who knows one day it might be a reality...

Cheetah female with 1 of her 5 cubs

One of the latest pictures on the female and her cubs.  All 5 still alive and doing very well.  Still to young to see or make out their sexes.

Cheetah female and her cubs

About 9 February 2010 our cheetah gave birth to 5 cubs.  Today they are almost 3 months old and already exploring the reserve and all the tasty meals that is jumping around.  The following photo's shows where the cubs had their first taste of meat....springbok meat that mother caught for them.  All 5 cubs are still alive and healthy.  Will keep you updated.

African Wild Cats

For those who know, MountCamdeboo started with a small predator project not to long ago.  One of the species in this project is the African Wild Cat that almost just looks like your normal house cat.
