It is this time of the year where we tend to get some snow on our high altitude areas. On the 14th June 2010 we got a call from our managers at about 20:00 to go and look outside. When we went outside there was light snow coming down. It usually snows on our high altitude areas like I mentioned and though the snow was falling down in the valley it was expected that it would be melted by the next morning.
So the next morning pulling away the curtains to see what the weather was like. Well it was white as far as you can see. The ground, trees and even the vehicle was all covered with snow.
After getting the vehicles windscreen clean we drove to the office and arrived with staff building snow men and having huge snowball fights. Some of our staff have been in the valley for years and I heard one said that the last we had snow so down into the valley was 1985 when he was only 5 years old.
Now what about the animals? Well, everything went on as normal and the animals know where to hide and what to do. Some animals like the plains game did not even go into hiding and nibbled on some grass that they could find between the snow.
The cheetah did not let the snow hold them back and even made kills. The male cheetah took down a nice big kudu cow and the female made sure her 5 cubs don’t go hungry in this cold weather and took down an adult male blesbuck.
Most of the snow is melted by now with some white peaks still standing out. We don’t know what July’s weather is going to bring us, but at least we got some sun for now and everything’s back to normal.
See the pic’s.
